Big Cat Wildlife Photo Safari – June 2018

Overview

We are delighted to repeat one of our most popular tours with this small group wildlife tour visiting the game rich Maasai Mara in Kenya, one of Africa’s most famous reserves and home to a year round abundance of predators. Where the Mara River provides the setting for the annual wildebeest and zebra migration and a reserve made famous by the BBC’s ‘Big Cat Diary’ and numerous other wildlife documentaries. The area provides copious photographic opportunities and an excellent chance for viewing lion, cheetah and is also a great place to see leopard. Whilst our focus will be predominantly on the ‘big cats’ we will also have plenty of time to photograph a rich diversity of other game, including elephant, buffalo, hippo and many antelope and bird species.

This safari is held just after the long rains and before the beginning of the Mara’s high season that starts in July. Providing a more economical and generally much quieter time to experience the Mara and good for either the first time visitor or the more seasoned safari connoisseur. The itinerary is designed as such to ensure plenty of time in each area and providing an unhurried safari experience. In addition, focusing on providing a spacious photographic and game viewing experience.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
  • Excellent opportunities to photograph the big cats,
  • An abundance of many other iconic African species to photograph, including elephant, hippo, zebra and buffalo.
  • Only 4 guests in each game vehicle
  • A total of 12 extended games drives – providing ample wildlife viewing opportunities
  • Centrally located mid-range lodge on the banks of the Talek River.
  • Excellent host to guest ratio
  • Very low single supplements
  • 25% discount on lens hire (discount applies to UK based guests only)

The tour is designed for any level of photographic knowledge. From those who just want to take ‘snaps’ through to the more serious enthusiast. We welcome both photographers and non-photographers on this trip. This tour will be characterised by maximising time in the field and so the only perquisite to join is flexibility and patience to stay out in the field for long periods. Andy & Sarah will of course be on hand to provide plenty of photographic tuition during drives and also back at camp. This will include tuition in both traditional and also creative photographic techniques. Such as high and low-key photography as well as panning techniques with slow shutter speeds and of course optimizing all light conditions to hand. Together with the local guides, Andy & Sarah will share their knowledge of the endemic wildlife.

The Game Vehicles

With a maximum group size of 8 people we will use two game viewing vehicles, with open sides, large open roof access and three rows of seating in the back. Each safari vehicle will provide plenty of room for all guests, equating to no more than 4 people, plus your host in each game-viewing vehicle. A fridge with drinks will be provided for game each drive (water included FOC). We can also provide photographic beanbags for use during your safari on request. The game vehicles used will have canvas sides and roof access.

Game drives times and durations can vary but on average we will be out in the field between 6-6:30am (ensuring times are in-line with Maasai Mara Park regulations) and staying out in the field often until around 11am, sometimes later, taking a picnic breakfast out on the plains or at a lovely spot by the river. Late morning we shall usually return to camp for lunch and a couple of hours rest before an afternoon drive starting between 3:30-4pm and lasting until sundown.

From here you will take an exciting 50-minute bush flight into the heart of the Maasai Mara (Note: strict 23kg luggage limit, including hand luggage – this includes your 8kg free extra allowance). With fabulous aerial views of the plains and game below as you arrive. On arrival you will take a short 5-minute transfer to Mara Intrepids camp, where a much-needed cool drink welcomes you. For those who are not too tired we will meet at around 3pm for tea & coffee, and if you have room left after lunch try the freshly cooked pancakes. We then depart on our first afternoon game drive, returning as the sun sets. There will be plenty of time for showers after your drive before we meet for a sumptuous dinner.Overnight: Mara Intrepids Camp, Maasai Mara (Full Board)

June 25th – 29th 2018

Enjoy 5 full days of morning & afternoon game drives. A normal day will involve an early morning wake up call, including tea or coffee and cookies before we head out early for our first morning drive. Our starts are indeed very early, however by far the best time to catch predators, such as lion and leopard at their most active. We will be out all morning, usually taking breakfast in the bush and returning to camp in time for lunch. After lunch you will have time for a quick snooze, a dip in the pool or simply relax by the river with a book, before we meet again at around 3-3:15pm for tea & cakes before our afternoon game drive. After time for showers we join as a group for dinner in the restaurant.

Above all, our days will remain flexible in order to make the most of available sightings and to spend the maximum time in the field. Depending on demand in the group (minimum numbers apply) there may also be the opportunity on one of the days for those who wish to visit a Maasai village or take an early morning balloon departure (cost not included). This can be arranged whilst we are at the camp. During one of the evenings you may also wish to enjoy one of the camp’s slideshows before dinner. Overnight: Mara Intrepids Camp, Maasai Mara, (Full Board)

June 30th 2018

Sadly this is the morning of our last drive where we will spend the last few hours on the African plains. We will return to camp giving you time to quickly shower and freshen up before your bags are collected from your rooms. After checking out there will be time for lunch at camp before you then take a transfer to the airstrip and take the 50-minute afternoon return flight back to Nairobi. You are then collected and taken to Nairobi’s international airport via either the Eka Hotel where, depending on your flight departure time there will be time to take a bite to eat in the hotel’s cafe or pool bar (cost not included) and relax in comfortable surroundings before your onward transfer a couple of hours later to the airport for your flight home (international flight cost not included) Breakfast & lunch included
