WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY by ANDY & SARAH SKINNER
We both have a deep and genuine passion for wildlife and a love of photography that started shortly after our first trip to Africa in 2004. Since this time we have gradually seen our photographic skills improve and evolve. In more recent years we have upgraded our camera equipment to include professional Nikon Digital SLR cameras and lenses. This ensures that we have the equipment to capture high quality images 'in the field'.
SARAH is deeply passionate and knowledgable about African wildlife, specifically the African predators and has undertaken a number of conservation & safari skills courses. In 2007 Sarah became fully qualified as a FGASA Level 1 South African Field Guide following intense training at Shamwari Game Reserve. In addition has worked on several African wildlife research projects. Sarah has also worked as a 'wildlife spotter' for a leading Film & TV production company filming a Disney Nature feature film in the Masai Mara. Sarah loves all aspects of bush life and especially using and applying her knowledge of the African bush and tracking skills for capturing images of animals in the wild.
As well as his strong photographic skills ANDY has a particular skill for intrepreting and identifying animal calls which ensures our ultimate enjoyment and enhances our ability to understand nature and locate wildlife. Andy is also a very skilled mechanic (Having rebuilt our Land Rover) and is highly competent in offroading 4x4 vehicles, which helps navigating the tough African terrain! Andy has also undertaken a safari skills course and has assisted on a wildlife rehabilitation project in Zimbabwe.
We currently own a Land Rover Defender that is stored in Kenya and used for our African photographic trips. We have fully modified it for the harsh African environment and to cater for all of our photographic requirements, including a photographic hatch, roof and window mounts. It is also well equipped with a rooftent, long range water and fuel tanks, plus full camping equipment and spare parts. This ensures it provides for all of our needs in the bush. Having our own vehicle provides us with immense enjoyment and great flexibility for all of our African trips.
Although we live and work in the UK we travel frequently to destinations around the world and have a passion for immersing ourselves in the environment as much as is possible. So when travelling we prefer to self drive and camp remotely where possible. This ensures we can appreciate all aspects of the 'bush' both night and day.
We are fortunate that our love of wildlife and travel has taken us to number of incredible countries from around the world. With a particular focus on Africa.
Countries visited to date include:
Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Nambia, Rwanda, South Africa, India, Svalbard (Arctic) & East/Western USA, incuding Hawaii
On many of these trips we also both been involved in volunteering on a number of different conservation and research projects.
These projects include:
- Lion Rehabilitaion in Zimbabwe
- Hyena Research: South Africa
- Born Free Foundation: South Africa
- Mananga Conservation project: South Africa.
- Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre: South Africa
