Tigers of Bandhavgarh photo safari – Overview

Our 9-day tigers of Bandhavgarh photo safari is undoubtedly one of our most popular tours. The feeling and experience of viewing and photographing a tiger in the wild is truly an incredible experience and a must for any lover of the big cats. The location for our tour is in Bandhavgarh National Park, a beautiful park set amidst the rolling Vindhya hills in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh.

The Tigers of Bandhavgarh photo safari offers an incredible opportunity to observe and capture stunning images of tigers. Guided by an experienced photography host along with a knowledgeable Indian naturalist. Every year of running this tour since 2018 we have had superb sightings for our groups. See our April 2023 Tigers of Bandhavgarh TRIP REPORT

Bandhavgarh National park

Bandhavgarh National Park has consistently proven to be one of the best places in the world to view and photograph the magnificent wild Bengal tiger. Where tiger sightings have continued to increase year on year, with all of our previous guests being fortunate to have enjoyed multiple tiger sightings on each of their tours. This lays the perfect foundations for the potential of continued great photographic opportunities within this wonderful national park.

What we can see

Our main goal during the Bandhavgarh tiger photo safari will be to capture amazing images of tigers, but we’ll also have the chance to spot a wonderful array of other wildlife in this beautiful national park. Which can include: sambar deer, barking deer, chital, nilgai, chinkara, chausingha, jungle cats, langur monkeys and if we are lucky leopard, dhole and sloth bear. In addition, the park is also home to a 240 bird species.

Group size & Hosts

For a group size of up to 6 x guests your tour will be hosted by one of our professional photography team (Sarah Skinner, Andy Skinner or Christopher Hodgson) all whom have extensive experience leading our tours in India. Balvinder Singh (Bali), an experienced local Indian guide/naturalist joins all India tours. This tour features an excellent host to guest ratio and a maximum group size of 8 guests.

For a group size of 7 or more your tour will be hosted by 2 x photo host and 1 x naturalist. During this tiger photo safari we rotate the hosts within game viewing jeeps (A max of 4 x jeeps to be used based on 8x guests). This means that all guests will have time with both hosts and dedicated support by a team with years of experience leading tours in India.

Balvinder Singh joins our tigers of Bandhavgarh photo safari as our own private guide/naturalist. We have worked with Bali for the last nine years and he continues to be an invaluable asset to our India tours. Born and bred in India, Bali is an award-winning guide & leader, and in 2010 he was nominated by Wanderlust magazine as one of the top ten leaders worldwide. Bali has previous experience as a local guide/leader for Exodus Travels and extensive experience travelling across India leading groups to discover the wonders of Indian wildlife.

What to Expect

During all departures of the tigers of Bandhavgarh photo safari we take twice daily games drives. Maximising our time in the field, with all game drives conducted in line with the national park opening times. Your photographic hosts will be on hand to provide all required tuition. Both in the field and back at the hotel with both group and/or individual sessions on post-processing using Lightroom. We work with all available wildlife opportunities and light conditions at hand to help you obtain the most out of your time in Bandhavgarh.

In addition, we also share advice as to how you can add a creative edge to your images to make them stand out from the crowd. Although this is classified as a photographic tour we also welcome non-photographers. This is also an ideal trip for all photography levels and for those wanting to simply immerse themselves in maximising wildlife viewing opportunities of viewing Bengal tigers in the wild.

In April the temperatures are very hot, which can often rise as high as 42°C and sometimes higher. However, during the peak of the heat of the day we are based at our lovely air-conditioned lodge, which has large guest rooms, a massage service (extra cost) and a large outdoor pool.

Guests should be aware that the game driving tracks in the park are somewhat bumpy and dusty. However, this all adds to the adventure! As with any wildlife adventure tiger sightings can ofcourse never be guaranteed. However, to date all of our previous groups have been fortunate to have enjoyed tiger sightings on every one of our tiger photo safaris departures. Sometimes being lucky to have seen multiple tigers per day.

The Game Vehicles

The tigers of Bandhavgarh photo safari runs with a maximum group size of 8 people. During the tour (and based on a full group) we use a maximum of four ‘gypsy style’ game viewing vehicles that are commonly used on Indian safaris.

The vehicle has open sides and an open roof area. On this photographic safari we will put no more than 2 guests, plus one host in each vehicle or a maximum of 3 guests per game vehicle. Providing a good amount of room for each guest. Your hosts, will be rotated across the maximum number of four jeeps used (based on 8x guests) throughout your game drives. Your photography hosts will be one of the highly experienced guides, either Andy Skinner, Sarah Skinner or Christopher Hodgson.

For group sizes of 1-6 guests your tour will be hosted by 1 x photographic host and 1 x Naturalist and this increases to 2 x photographic hosts and 1 x Naturalist for a group size of 7-8 guests.

During our game drives we use experienced drivers who have an excellent knowledge of the tigers in the area. In addition to understanding the needs of photographic groups.

Tigers of Bandhavgarh photo safari Pre-Trip advice

2-3 months prior to travel you will receive a comprehensive document that provides packing advance and also plenty of other useful information for our Tigers of Bandhavgarh photo safari. The below provides some key additional information that you may find useful ahead of booking your safari with us.

Tour language:

This tour is an English speaking tour. Please note: that not all lodge staff or forest guides will have a good understanding and use of understanding the English language. However, we do have a local Indian guide (Balvinder Singh) who is able to assist here if required.

Visas:

Foreign nationals visiting India must obtain a visa prior to their arrival in India. The new e-visa system can be accessed here: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html

Please be aware that the application form can be quite lengthy, so it is therefore advised to allow at least one – two hours to complete! Visas are usually granted quite fast (2-3 days). Please be wary of other visa providers who may charge extra for the visa service. Instead use the government’s own website to avoid extra visa service fees.

It is your responsibility to also ensure that your passport is valid for a minimum of six months and has several clear pages for visas prior to departure. It is also suggested that you check your status as regards visas prior to travel as they can change on a regular basis.

Vaccinations:

We are not qualified or legally allowed to provide vaccination or medical advice. Therefore. you should consult your travel nurse or doctors for specific medical advice and up to date advise on vaccinations required. We suggest doing this at least 2-3 months prior to travel or sooner if this allows.

Generally recommended vaccinations are: Polio, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Typhoid, Hepatitis A.

The below link will provide as a guide as to what is needed. For more info https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/countries

Diarrhea / Giardia etc. –  good personal hygiene and control over the quality of your drinking water should avoid this, bottled water is readily available throughout the country, but take along some diarrhea and rehydration medicine just in case, particularly if you are planning to spend some time traveling alone and not with a tour.  We recommend that guests buy only bottled water with the seal intact. Bottled water is usually provided free of charge as standard at most safari lodges and tented camps. Please ensure bottled water is used when brushing one’s teeth, even in well-established camps and city lodges.

Fitness Level Required:

This tour does not require a high level of fitness. However, guests should be able to get in/out of a game vehicle (a step up/down of around 2 feet) with little or no assistance and should be capable of walking up to 200 metres to and from their room at the lodges/hotels with their own camera equipment. Guests should also be aware of the high temperatures below that can be experienced at this time of the year. See below.

Weather & environmental conditions

During April/May in India it is their summer, late mornings and afternoons will be very hot. Usually on average temperatures will be around 35-41 °C, but they can also go to as high as 45 degrees. Rain at this time of the year is generally not experienced, although occasionally there can be the odd thunderstorm. Our lodge and our rooms have very good air conditioning and most rooms also have a fridge.

You may require a lightweight fleece or a light sweater for a short time while during morning safaris. The moment the sun starts coming up, it starts getting very hot. The heat can start from early/mid-morning.

It is very important to avoid dehydration in these temperatures by wearing a hat and drinking plenty of water. In the evening it can still be warm. On our group photo safaris, we use air-conditioned hotels and lodges.

Internal Flights:

Please be aware of the 15kg weight allowance for your hold luggage for the internal flights. Additional luggage may be permitted at a cost to be payable by the guests at approx 500 rupees per KG.

Camera Equipment:

For game viewing we would recommend bringing a camera/lenses that can cater for a range of distances, A good starting point is to have a camera/lens that can accommodate focal lengths of between 100 – 400mm. In general, you will be using longer lenses/focal length for the majority of the time. However, some tiger sightings may be experienced at much closer focal lengths, or you may want to take a more wider-angle lens for environment images. Therefore, we would recommend lenses/cameras that provides a minimum of around 70-100mm focal length, with the opportunity of a zoom lens or an alternative lens that can cater for sightings at a further distance (e.g. 400mm – 600mm)

Often on safari you will be photographing in the early morning and early evening and therefore sometimes in low light. So, for those more serious photographers we therefore recommend faster lenses, for example F4 or below. Further information on photography equipment will be supplied as part of your pre-trip advice.

Gratuities:

Gratuities are not included in the cost of your safari. What you provide as a gratuity is very much up to the individual traveler. However, below is a guideline of what is generally recommended to budget for.

Tipping is very much part of the culture in India and is usually expected and it is advisable to have local currency for this purpose. Wages for most nationals of India in the national parks are very low and as we like to ensure we are tipping for the good service we receive from local staff we respectfully ask guests attending the group photo tours to provide a total of 17,000 rupees please per person to your hosts (TBC on final itinerary). This will cover all of your tipping requirements during your 6-nights in Bandhavgarh and also for some services whilst in Delhi. Please provide this amount in the local currency (Rupee).

Your hosts will collect this amount from you at the beginning of the tour or on the first night at Bandhav Villas. Which will then be used during your trip to avoid you having to worry about paying gratuities daily or at end of the trip. We have found this works best for our guests and also based on previous feedback. As an approximate conversion: 17,000 rupees equates to around £155/$200 per person.

Further detail on gratuities will be provided as part of the pre-trip advice.

WiFi/Phone Network Access:

At most of the lodges or hotels in India there is Wi-Fi access. However, please be aware that the speed of these networks may be much slower than normal broadband speeds. There is generally good access to cellular networks in Delhi. This can be very sporadic in the more rural areas of India.

Dietary:

Most dietary requests can be catered for with advance notice provided to us at least two months prior to departure.

Travel Insurance:

We strongly recommend purchasing your own travel insurance at the time of booking to cover any eventualities should you need to cancel your tour due to unforeseen circumstances as both the deposit and final balances are non-refundable. Guests travelling without their own travel insurance do so at their own risk.

BALVINDER SINGH

We are honoured to have Bali as part of the Images of Wildlife team. We have worked with him for many years in India and he now leads two of our tours, and co-hosts our Tigers of Bandhavgarh Photo Safari. Balvinder Singh, known as Bali to his friends, attended school in Delhi. He completed a bachelor’s degree in Travel & Tourism whilst simultaneously studying for a three-year diploma in French language.

Upon completion of his studies, he worked for a small local Inbound tour company, specializing in trekking groups from France. Eventually the company became the local operator for Exodus Travels UK, hosting international groups alongside English leaders. These tours focused on discovery, culture, adventure and wildlife. In 2005, Exodus stopped using their own English leaders, instead making full use of their knowledgeable local Indian leaders, including Bali, For the next decade Bali was hosting and leading groups all across his beloved home country. on behalf of this large UK based adventure tour operator.

Throughout this time, he gained extensive experience in trekking with groups in the Himalayas, alongside leading cultural and discovery tours all across India. Eventually, Bali began leading wildlife trips to tiger reserves and national parks in India. This ignited his passion and thirst for Indian wildlife and nature photography that would change his future life path.

Bali’s awards & Experience with Images of Wildlife

He soon became one of the top Indian tour leaders. Twice awarded as “Best Commended Tour Leader of the Year’ award by Exodus. In 2010 he was nominated by Wanderlust magazine as one of the 10 best leaders worldwide. In 2015, Bali set up his own company, specializing in wildlife trips. Using his previously gained knowledge as a tour leader and naturalist, he began offering birding and tiger tours in India. In 2017 Images of Wildlife began using Bali as our local operator for our Tigers of Bandhavgarh Photo Safari. His knowledge not only of Indian nature, but also the national parks and its network of guides became invaluable to the success of this tour.

Bali now leads our Snow Leopards of Spiti Valley Himalayan Adventure and our Tigers & Wildlife of India Safari whilst continuing to co-host our Tigers of Bandhavgarh Photo Safari with our team of photography guides. His friendly demeanour and outstanding knowledge of Indian wildlife makes him a hit with guests. He is an integral asset to the Images of Wildlife team. He is a self-taught and keen wildlife photographer and uses Canon.
